Samsung has developed a new eye tracking system

Engineers of the South Korean technological giant Samsung have developed the EyeCan + system, which will allow paralyzed people with the help of eye movements to control the operating system of the computer, like an ordinary mouse.

The system is an oblong camera, somewhat reminiscent of the Kinect sensor, which is located under the monitor and aimed at the face of an immobilized person. Using EyeCan + paralyzed people will be able to write and edit texts, surf the Internet, using only the movement of their pupils and blinking eyes.

The project was designed by Samsung engineers in their spare time, so we can say that it is a product of naked enthusiasm and none of the leadership was sponsored. The basis for the development lay the technology developed in the bowels of the company back in 2012. But this system was significantly improved and brought to a completely new technical level.

In many ways, a paralyzed Korean student, Hyun-Jin Shin, whom you can see in the photograph, helped the engineers to test the new technology. During 17 months of active testing of EyeCan +, Hyun-Jin allowed the development team to significantly refine the system interface to make it as easy to understand and convenient to use.

However, the system will not go to open sale. Samsung has produced a limited number of EyeCan + and sent them to charities that must decide which of the paralyzed patients around the world to provide new technology. Pleases in this whole story one thing: since the project is completely non-commercial, all its documentation is completely freely distributed by the developers. Any company can use it to develop such systems and improve them on their own.
