Sony HMZ-T3: very personal cinema

Personal head-up displays by different companies are perceived in different ways and are created for different purposes. In Sony decided that it is most interesting to create not a means of virtual reality, but a small home theater for one and, it seems, succeeded in this.

The HMZ-T3 is a design consisting of two cable-connected parts that allows you to immerse yourself in the world of computer games and video viewing in conditions where large plasma panels are not readily available. A head piece weighing three hundred and a small gram is located on the head of the user, quite comfortably, for which several regulators of the position of the belts holding the "helmet" are responsible. At first it may seem that there is still a slight advantage in the direction of the block with the displays that form the image, but you can choose the position of the head, in which discomfort completely disappears or at least will be minimal.

In addition to the HMZ-T3, you can also find a cover that is easy to clean, and the headrest display with a unit for connecting playback devices, and a charger to it, and all the necessary patch cables.

The switch-and-battery unit has two inputs for connection to the image source - HDMI and MHL. The latter will allow you to easily view the picture from a tablet or smartphone. Unfortunately, not all mobile devices are able to turn off their screens when outputting images through MHL, so that the owner of the HMZ-T3 in some cases will have to demonstrate to others what is happening on the smartphone's display. The rechargeable part of the "helmet" in such a portable version of the device is able to maintain the performance of the head-up display for three hours - not so much, although you can watch several series of your favorite series on the way, for example, to St. Petersburg. True, only on the condition that you are moving on the Sapsan, and about half way take a break for lunch.

The device is controlled using the buttons on the head portion of the HMZ-T3. The joystick, volume buttons, device activation, as well as sliders for adjusting the distance between displays are easily touched, so you will not get used to the "blind" setting.

The resolution of the displays is 1280 x 720, and they are made according to Sony's favorite OLED technology, thanks to which the colors look bright and juicy, but, unfortunately, sometimes a little untrue. However, you can select the color gamut to your tastes by using one of several settings for the output image. Unfortunately, there is no diopter adjustment in the device, but you can use the HMZ-T3 even with glasses.

The first thing to check was the ability of Sony HMZ-T3 to play movies. Both HD and Full HD are played superbly. And thanks to the fact that this device uses separate displays for the left and right eyes, it was possible to achieve a very high-quality reproduction of 3D-video. True, in very dynamic scenes some "trails" of the residual image of fast moving objects are noticeable, but this does not create a special strain for the eyes. It was quite interesting to use the HMZ-T3 as a display for the computer. However, in order to fully work with the texts, you must also have the skills of blind printing. Constantly in this role, the headline display from Sony is unlikely to be used by anyone, but the experience is still very curious.

But playing with the use of HMZ-T3 as a device for displaying images - it's really interesting. This, of course, is not Oculus Rift, so when you turn the head, the image will not move, but the effect of the dive is noticeable quite noticeably. By the way, in order to avoid lightening the image, Sony has provided special rubber "plugs": if you darken the room where the HMZ-T3 is operating, you can not "plunge into the gloom" the inner space of the helmet

By the way, we worked in Sony and on the sound produced by the device. Thanks to the use of proprietary technologies, even in normal headphones, you can get a good similarity of multi-channel, up to 7.1, sound. Of course, a multi-column home system can not be replaced by any virtualization technology, but on the road, away from a cozy home theater, this sound can not be considered a worthy decision.

The main purpose of Sony HMZ-T3 is to provide the owner with a personal cinema in conditions when there is no possibility to carry a big screen with you. For example, to put a bag in the bag with this device and go to the dacha, on vacation or business trip, so that you can immerse yourself in the world of "big" cinema at any time - the solution is just for such a head-top display.
